Energy costs and return on investment: Of course we all know what energy prices have done, and will continue to do. High energy prices have knocked down the payback period (return on investment) on geothermal dramatically. A new system in a new construction home will pay for itself as a result of energy savings in an average of 5-7 years. For existing homes the payback is 8-9 years. Generally speaking, your heating and cooling costs will be about 65%-70% lower than an equivalent gas heating/electric cooling system. Remember, this is savings on after-tax dollars so the equivalent taxable rate of return you would have to make on an investment would normally be higher!
Life cycle cost: Geothermal offers the lowest lifecycle costs of any heating and cooling system available today by a long shot. These are the costs of operation, maintenance, eventual replacement of the indoor unit (the geothermal loop outdoors should not need to be replaced), and any other repairs that may be needed over the life of the system. The spread in life cycle costs may favor geothermal even more given the new wind and solar electric generation products we will soon see (see below), and the increased costs for gas and electric over the life of the unit.

It is evident that in the next 10-15 years we will see wind and solar energy play a key part in generating and providing electricity to homes and businesses. It is also true that because of greenhouse gas emissions, power plants will generate more and more power utilizing natural gas. We believe this will drive up natural gas prices quite high.
When one looks at providing a long-term solution for their heating and cooling needs, geothermal makes a lot of sense since they run on electric, and most, if not all, of the new technologies we will rely on in the future generate electricity. Geothermal systems should connect to these new electric generation devices with a minimum amount of effort. Geothermal systems will not get outdated as compared to gas furnaces and electric air conditioning/air to air heat pumps.
A sustainable, green heating and cooling system: Explaining geothermal in a very simplistic way goes something like this: You pay the utility company $1.00 to heat or cool your home. At the same time you pick-up $3.00-$5.00 of free energy from the earth compliments of the sun's radiation heat absorbed by the earth, and you deliver $4.00-$6.00 of heating or cooling to your home or business. And it only cost you $1.00! It's like putting a dollar in your left pocket and pulling a $5 bill from your right pocket. Now that's sustainable, green technology that makes sense!
